7 Tips To Quit Smoking

Smoking is a bad habit that can cause serious consequences to your health and can affect the well-being of your family and friends. For those trying to quit smoking, there are a number of tips that you can use to help you quit. Firstly, have self belief that you can quit smoking. It takes determination to quit smoking.

Take some time out to write down a list about some of the things you feel will help you quit smoking. Also write down why you want to quit. Some of the reasons could be a better quality of life or for the sake of the family. Ask family and friends to support your decision to quit and let them know before-hand that you might be irritable as you try to quit smoking.

Set a date as to when you intend to stop smoking and plan for it. Prepare your mind that you will never pick up a cigarette ever again after that day. In the meantime, consult your doctor about your plan to quit. Support from a health expert will prove crucial in your fight to quit.

Learn what causes you to smoke. It could be due to stress, work environment or something else. Try and do something else that will help you deal with these scenarios rather than pick up a cigarette. Keep a journal on hand to write down your feelings whenever you are craving a cigarette. This will help identify what are some of the triggers that causes you to smoke.

Start an exercise programme. Exercise will help to relieve stress and will help the body to recover from years of damage from cigarettes. Start slowly so that you do not overexert yourself and then build up your programme. See your doctor first before beginning an exercise programme.

Try quitting smoking “cold turkey”. Many people who have successfully quit smoking have found the best way to quit once and for all is to quit abruptly. You can also find another smoker who is trying to quit and help each other with supporting words or by lending a ear when quitting becomes tough.

Drinking lots of water helps. Water is essential for all life and most people don’t get enough. It will help to flush out the nicotine and other harmful chemicals as well as reduce your cravings for a cigarette.

After you have successfully quit, celebrate your achievement. Go see a movie with your friends or go to a nice restaurant for a nice dinner. Maybe after a few months, take a nice holiday or have a party to celebrate your new healthier lifestyle.

I have many friends that smoke, and they all tell me they wish they had never started. It is hard to stop, but I know it is possible with the proper motivation. I know many people who have kicked the habit through faith in a Christian religion.
