The session will be conducted by Alexandra Hospital’s geriatrician and social worker specialising in dementia care.  It is necessary for all family carers of patients who have recently been diagnosed with dementia or mild cognitive impairment (within the last 6 months) to attend this workshop.

The dementia orentation workshop serves to:

• inform you of all the dementia programmes and services in Alexandra Hospital
• provide you with the essential information on dementia and caregiving in dementia
• allow you to pose questions concerning dementia

Workshop Outline

This is a “crash course” in dementia specially designed for family caregivers of patients with dementia.  Area covered include:

1. The medical aspects of dementia eg types of dementia, when is forgetfulness normal and when is it dementis, is dementia hereditary etc
2. The stages of dementia – drugs & supplements, non-drug treatments
3. Understanding the person with dementia
4. Caregiving in dementia
5. Dementia services in Alexandra Hospital and in Singapore

Rebekah Keat winning the AIM 70.3 2008

How it all started in 1978

During the awards ceremony for a Hawaii running race, a debate ensues among competitors about who is more fit — swimmers, runners or other athletes. One of the participants, Navy Commander John Collins and his wife Judy, dream up a race to settle the argument. They propose combining three existing races together, to be completed in succession: the Waikiki Roughwater Swim (2.4 miles), the Around-Oahu Bike Race (112 miles, originally a two-day event) and the Honolulu Marathon (26.2 miles). “Whoever finishes first we’ll call the Ironman,” said Collins. Fifteen men participate in the initial event held on February 18; 12 complete the race, led by the first Ironman, Gordon Haller. His winning time: 11 hours, 46 minutes and 58 seconds.

Reigning Ironman World Champion Craig Alexander and the current fastest woman in the Ironman series Yvonne Van Verklen, both of whom took part in the inaugural AIM 70.3 in 2007 have also signed up for this year’s race. In addition, defending champions Simon Thompson and Rebekah Keat will attempt to retain their titles by putting up a tough fight against their peers.
