Smoking Ban Extended

The smoking prohibition in Singapore has been in place since 1970 and has been progressively extended to cover many public areas such as air-conditioned premises such as shops, shopping centres, factories, offices and restaurants, and also public facilities such as lifts, community centres/clubs, swimming pools, stadiums and bus shelters. It also includes non air-conditioned eating establishments such as coffee shops, cafes and hawker centres, as well as all entertainment outlets such as pubs, bars and discotheques.

To further protect members of the public from the harmful health effects of second-hand tobacco smoke, the National Environment Agency (NEA) is strengthening the existing smoking prohibition with the following extensions. From 1 January 2009, smoking is prohibited in

  • Indoor public places, regardless of whether they are air-conditioned
  • Entrances and exits of buildings and facilities where smoking is prohibited (within 5m of the entrances or exits where practicable)
  • Playgrounds and exercise areas.

If you are the manager of a smoke free premise, it is your duty to ensure that the smoking prohibition is observed at your premises. If a smoker smokes in your premises, please inform the smokers to stop smoking or leave the premises.

As part of our effort to help managers implement the smoking prohibition, we have prepared posters and labels to be displayed at affected premises. Enclosed in this letter are copies of the posters and labels, which you can put up to inform the public of the prohibition. For more information regarding the smoking prohibition, please visit the NEA website at http://www.nea.gov.sg where you can also download the poster and label for printing.

If you have any queries, please contact the NEA at 1800-2255 632 (1800-CALL NEA) or contact_nea@nea.gov.sg.
