Tips To Deal With Childhood Obesity
Obesity is a serious disease affecting millions of people all over the world. Now more than ever, children are also having to deal with this health problem. The good news though is that obesity can be treated, but the best way to prevent it from happening to your child is to encourage healthy lifestyle habits in your children, so that when they grow older they will continue to practice it. Some positive habits include:
- Healthy eating. Provide your kids with nutritious snacks such as vegetables, fruits, low-fat dairy foods and whole grains.
- Regular physical activity. Encourage your kids to play outdoors instead of sitting at the computer all the time.
- Limiting television time to just 2 hours a day.
- Including a proper diet and adequate amounts of physical activity into your kids daily lifestyle will help them achieve a healthy weight and avoid becoming overweight.
Schools can also help students achieve an ideal weight by decreasing the availability of junk food and soft drinks in their canteen. These types of food and beverages have little nutritional value. Schools can reduce their dependency on vending machines and snack bars on campus so that students are not tempted to buy unhealthy snacks.
Another way to help the students is to make sure that there are regular fitness activities in the curriculum so that they maintain an active lifestyle.
Pediatricians also encourage mothers to breastfeed their babies because the longer you breastfeed, the less likely that your child will become overweight later in childhood.
If you are concerned that your child might be overweight, then take them to see a pediatrician today. Ask about your child’s BMI and whether he or she is overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. Also encourage your whole family to adopt healthy eating habits and regular physical activity. It will be beneficial for your child to have family support in the fight against obesity.
